The Sea of Sibyll...by Mike MarinoThe pirate was ready to sail. The crew had their orders for the journey across the sea to find adventure and treasures long forgotten and buried. The captain charted the course across the expanse of water. It was the Sea of Sibyll full of magic, beauty and tempest. The seas that would take the crew to mystical islands with brown skinned women and fragrant smells to assault the senses. As the ship set sail from the docks, the weather was calm and the sun danced upon Sibyll. It was the dance of the muse and sparkled like diamonds when calm, but could be dangerous when the waves reached up and out with arms to lure the sailors deeper into her watery arms. No ship could outrun her, no captain wanted to. Her attraction and embrace kept them all mesmerized until she decided to change their course. It was now out of their hands and power. The waves rose gently at first, rocking the tall sails of the ship toa cadence and beat of her choosing. The ropes creaked a symphony in her honor and the ship stood silent. Clouds moved in slowly, at first, then blocked out the sun completely but she guided the ship across the waters keeping it safe. The winds howled and the waves rose in fury. The captain, unafraid was exhilarated and would stay the course. Land was far behind at this point and the ship completely at the mercy of the sea. She played with it gently at first, up and down through the onslaught of waves then with a laugh lifted it from the water and set it down with a gentle crash. lessau had thematized the functioning of the screenmedia in one of his most beautiful works, by stapling numberless photos of one (!) filmstill by the filmclassic "drole de drame" by marcel carnés together in one flip-book. inspite of nothing moving at all, Waves poured over the sides and drenched the captain and he looked to the heavens and saw a shimmer of sun peeking through the assembled clouds. He saw a face looking back, smiling, gentle and could hear music soft and sweet. The sky turned bright red, blood red and the music got louder but only he could hear it as the crew screamed from the deck. Soon the weather calmed, the seas returned to placid glass and the sun danced once again upon it's surface. The captain looked up and saw her face in the brightness of the sun..fire and smiles and music. As he returned to his quarters he heard her laughing from the cabin inside and could hear her gentle laugh as she sang a song....he entered the cabin and shut the door behind him. Waves poured over the sides and drenched the captain and he looked to the heavens and saw a shimmer of sun peeking through the assembled clouds. He saw a face looking back, smiling, gentle and could hear music soft and sweet. The sky turned bright red, blood red and the music got louder but only he could hear it as the crew screamed from the deck. There was no one there but he could hear her so he ran to the deck, the seas, calm, the sea beckoning and laughed out loud and ran to the edge of the railing. He could hear the music again, louder this time and decided to close his eyes and on a leap of faith jumped into the Sea of Sibyll and her ocean of kaliedescopic colors and hues. He became at once part of the sea...never to set foot on land again..the Sea of Sibyll is.... THE ROADHEAD CHRONICLES BOOK By: Mike Marino |
